Default Help - car won't start!

My MY98, just about to hit 70K miles, seems to be a bit nervous about this particular anniversary, and has stopped working this morning.

When I turn the key, instead of the whine of the starter motor, I hear a rapid tick-tick-ticking and nothing else.

I guess this is an easy thing to diagnose, if you're not me, for instance, but any clues of what it's caused by and a cheap way of getting it fixed would be much appreciated.

My guess, for what it's worth, is that the starter motor's solenoid needs replacing.

I'd agree with Alyn, if you have leccy windows you could try running them up and down they tend to be pretty sick when your battery's flat.

Aha, is that all, y'think? I shall buy some cables tomorrow and try it out.

Didn't think it would just be that - it's done about 800 miles in the last week so I'd have thought it was fairly topped up. Maybe battery is just too old or summat..

Cheers for your help!
