sometimes after a 'spirited' drive i seem to have trouble getting the car into reverse, any idea what this is? its a my95 STi BTW

Mine was the clutch mate. Mods dictated that I had to upgrade to an AP one anyway which seemed to cure the problem although I still have the odd occasion when it doesn't select first time!
have you changed your clutch fluid to dot5.1?
a very worthwhile thing to do trust me, i lost all gears coming back from somerset in spirited fashion also.
turns out my clutch fluid had been boiled .
