Question Knock Link Help..?

Just had a knock link fitted, and not sure if it’s working correctly.

First off, when we where trying to calibrate the sensor we could not get the lights to light up, even under some duress.

If you tap the sensor the lights do flutter up to the red, but never when driving.

According to the instructions the lights should come on when driving, if the sensor is set to max.

We could not get them to light at all.

Any help?

Cheers

Most people leave theirs on maximium sensitivity - It would appear to be working correctly if 'tapping the sensor' lights the LEDS but for piece of mind have the car checked with DET cans

It is working fine if when you tap it they flutter up , should be set to max sensitivity fully clockwise , during running you only get the first green led lit to indicate power , the lights should only light up under running conditions if it detects DETONATION which means engine damage so your car is running fine and you are lucky i have just had a split dump valve return hose into the air inlet and the knocklink indicated a problem two greens and an amber due to the car sucking in air after maf . Now it is all quite again , just keep an eye on it to indicate a problem but usually no lights , some people get the odd greens which can be just engine noise eg something rattling or noisey gearbox on gear change just look out for amber and red .

You definately do NOT want the red light coming on when driving!!

The fact you say the lights do come on when you tap the sensor (bolt) suggests you have it wired up correctly.

What you have bought the knocklink for as i am sure you are aware is to warn of pre detonation, this is signified on the display as a rapid rise on the lights up to the red.

You may see one or even two greens coming on when starting the engine with sensitivity set to max, and the same at higher rpm when driving, this is normal and common. What you don't want when driving is a rapid rate of rise on the lights and especially to the red LED.

Sounds to me from what you have described it is behaving normally.

The instructions can be quite misleading, as the Knocklink isn't specifically intended for use solely with Imprezas. Link really should add a line before the calibration paragraph, something along the lines of...

"If the maximum sensitivity setting creates excessive activity, specifically NOT in the form of 'spikes' (ie. constant activity that increases as engine speed increases), carry out the following calibration..."
