Default Car DIY basics?

Hi

Any recommendations for basic equipment needed to tinker with the car? eg socket set, jack etc?

Also, If I'm trying to fit four new wheels, or a front splitter, can I do that on my driveway with certain bits and bobs (stands or something, no idea), or get them fitted by the supplier/use a bodyshop?

I'm a complete newbie, so treat me as such

Get a trolley jack, a couple of axle stands and a socket set - and a Haynes manual may not be a bad idea if you are that inexperienced.
How anyone does not know how to change a wheel though is beyond me.

well OK, I could change a wheel, but figured that if you are changing all four, that piddly little thing in the boot won't be much good, and I'd have to do it on the main road, as my drive is slightly sloped.

Thanks for the info though - doesn't sound too bad. Could you prop up the front on axle stands and work safely under the front? Would that also do me for oil changes etc?

As sulli says, plus filter wrench, container to drain oil into, funnel to avoid mess when pouring in new oil, sheet of hardboard to put under the car to stop oil getting on the road.....although, tbh, if you work in the street, your neighbours may put the boot in whether you make a mess or not, I believe this practice is illegal, may be wrong about this though. Happy tinkering!

Btw, yes axle stands are o.k., providing, obviously, that the car is parked on level ground.....don't work under the car with just a trolley jack supporting it.
