I just would like to know if there's any differance in fuel grades
when you get Super Unleaded from the likes of
Shell
Esso
BP
Sainsbury
Tesco's

Should I stick to one or does it not matter ?

Yes, there is a difference (especially the supermarket stuff). Personally, I've found Optimax to be a better fuel for reducing det than SUL.

Mine loves it.

 

My 03WRX PPP has a flat spot with optimax, and 'sounds' rougher on BP ultimate.
To cure the flat spot problem I use 50 / 50 Esso super and optimax mix, gives a real kick in the back, much better pick up than either fuel on its own, and pulls cleanly to the red line.

 

My car sounds louder on BP Ultimate for some reason but goes better, on Optimax if feels smoother but doesnt feel as quick as when its on BP fuel...strange.
I always use either BP or Optimax, Ive only once put 95 ron in her and that was when I was in the middle of wales with no petrol.

I put BP in mine and it knocked it's nuts off. Could have been a bad batch, but i'm not going to put another tank in to find out

Esso Superunleaded for me - BP was crap and Optimax too variable IMO.

Had Esso SUL tested about 4 months ago and it came out at 98.4 RON btw (yes, 98 not 97.....)

Shell Optimax

 

I will be filling up with Esso SUL tomorrow as have been using optimax for ages and should therefore be able to see any significant changes or not, tried sainsburys SUL but it didnt have that grunt factor to it, I find optimax likes to be a little too enthusiastic in lower revs causing unsteady boosting

I always use optimax. I tried bp ultimate when the shell garage ran out and whether it was just in my head I don't know but the car didn't feel right at all. It felt slightly lumpy and didn't seem to want to pull at times. As soon as I went back to the old optimax it ran fine again so I just stick with that now.

 

Optimax all the way, although was empty on friday and had to make do with Jet 95

 

There are no Shell or BP pumps near me only Esso & Texaco and i think Esso have stopped the SUL pumps.What else can i use?
I have a MY01 bugeye only had it a week so driving carefully on 95RON

It shouldn't eat itself on 95, but any Super Unleaded, even Texaco's, would be better than 95.

 

Could they all be placebos?

I drive 20k a year in my scoob, sometimes very hard, sometimes like Miss daisy is in the back, and the difference between say BP Ultimate and Optimax (I think) is just in folks heads...

I use super unleaded all the time - Optimax normally as i pass the Shell Garage at Haydock Island every day - and because Shell has a reputation for being cleaner - so better for my engine.

Performance wise - I dont think any of us would notice 0.1 of a second to 60 etc - So what are you people with strong opinions on this basing your judgements on?

I'm not trying to be confrontational - but I'm baffled by the performance sensitivty of some human being type people...

Had my MY04 WRX 3 months now, love it

Ran on Esso SUL for the first 3k miles then switched to Optimax, instant 3% improvement in mpg, better when averaged over 1k miles

OK its still loosening up and improving so should try again after about 10k but I am convinced

well i have been using optimax for as long as i can remember as its convenient having 2 garages opposite sides of the road where i go to work but last night i filled up with esso sul and i must say the spool up is much smoother and the overall kick to redline feels a lot smoother too.

 

Cheapest i can find asda or tesco.

 

Its my first Subaru and been using 95ron since day 1 when delivered in March 04

do you think an STi will see damage over 4K miles??

 

What about running 95ron + octane booster would you get the benefits of SUL & is it safe?

In my old 106 GTi (161 bhp tunned) I used to only ever notice a difference in performane when using Esso SU and it ran like a dog on Optimax even to making it sound like a pile of poo.

In my old MY99 Scoob I ran 95 ron during the week (due to high mileage) and Optimax + Booster at weekends, the difference was noticible. Never had any problems running it on 95 ron, although I was just driving up and down the M6

It didn't matter what fuel I put in the Civic Type R, it was always to slow

When I get my STi 7 next weekend I will be running it on Optimax (weekend car only this time round) somwhat related to the fact the previous owner was told to after having starting difficulties on a couple of occasions and this sorted it.

Optimax is the way to go for forced induction cars, and I'm sure I notice a worthwhile performance for the extra cost per tank. As for normally aspirated it don't make alot of odds.
