A search of the archives indicates that a great number of you change your oil between the regular service intervals. However, do you change the oil filter aswell or leave that to the dealer at the normal service?

Otis,

If you are going to change the oil then change the filter as well. Otherwise its not worth it.

If you use a fully synthetic oil tests have shown that you can leave the oil changes 3 x the normal recommended interval with no deterioration!

I don't know anyone who would do that though with such a high performance newish car. BUT it certainly leaves me feeling relaxed about using a good oil no more often than at the recommended intervals!

DaveW,

I would disagree. I would not expect excessive wear on my scooby engine, so I would not expect the filter to become clogged due to particles of metal. From all accounts, scooby engines seem to hold together pretty well.

The oil however takes a pretty rough time. Its given quite a hard thrashing, and starts to break down over a period of time. So I would consider changing the oil only as an extra service. Yes, you will get a little contamination from the old oil still in teh filter, but this is an extra service not main one, so you are still improving the situation.

Should be fully synthetic. Mobil 1 is normally added(in UK turbos). I've also seen Silkolene Pro 10W/50 recommended.

So is Shell Helix Plus as recommended by Subaru UK semi or fully synthetic?

My garage has used Mobil 1 in the 2 oil services I have had so far.

How would you know Phil, you don't even own a Subaru anymore? I don't want you practising your Noddy car Fiat Panda techniques on my pride and joy

Mick, (and anyone else who knows),

I thought fully synthetic oil was not recommended for the Impreza?

New Spanner in the works.

I change the Oil every 3000 miles regardless.
I also undo the Oil Filter and drain it, I have hands like shovels so I'm able to do it.

I also use an old trick of attaching a biggish [1 inch square & 1/2 inch thick] magnet to the bottom of the oil filter, the Racers of old used to do this saying the magnet made any metal patricles in the oil stay in the filter. Bit excessive maybe, but then it makes me happy and give others something to talk about.

Cheers
