Unhappy Another STI lump goes clank clank!!

Hi all, am posting this on behalf of my distraught best mucker.
He has a JDM STI 7 RA (quite rare I believe?) with 22k on and I know what you are all thinking as did I but.......

He was on motorway going steady when oil light flickers on, major panic, dart into services and engine proceeds to take 2.5 ltrs of oil to restore level!!!!

On resuming journey, knock knock clank clank etc (tragic to even think about) so stops and switches off and calls the boys in orange for a tow home.

Does this sound like the usual det causing piston melt and all that stuff with air mass meter thrown in to add insult with crank and/or big end(s) finally calling it a day, or lack of oil causing bottom end buggeration?

Car is standard as from factory I believe!

And the next question would be, would a short engine be better or a rebuild both for cost and longeivity??

I know will be tough to answer without seeing but do any of you recognise his plight?

Any ideas where to get an engine, is it a special one being an RA or will any STI 7 lump do it??

Cheers guys.
There but for the grace.........

Standard as from the factory - Does this mean that he didn't re map for UK fuel?

That can cause it.

RSV Racer (Conrad) has a STI7 short engine for sale to sort.

2.5 litres of oil! - that's over half the sump capacity! There's a very good chance that what was left was flying around the engine and left the oil pick-up with little but air to suck up and the first port of call after the filter is the bearings.
When did he last check the oil level? Hate to say it but this could just possibly be self-inflicted?

sounds like he forgot to check the oil and knackered it himself.

Yep, all of the above true!!
Thanks for your replies.
Conrad, will give him your details, many thanks - The car is being looked at early next week so he'll have a better understanding of what he needs, some ends or the full ticket!!
Cheers.
