Default Head swaps

I've got a couple of engines, one a 94 turbo which has run its crank and bearings and a 98 turbo which has run a cam. I'm hoping to rebuild them into a single good engine using the 94 heads and the 98 block, all looked good as the gaskets are identical until I spotted that the pistons are different.

The earlier engine has deep pockets for each valve whilst the newer one has a single, shallower dish. My suspicion is that this could mean that the older engine has higher lift cams do needs the pockets to give the valve clearance. If that is the case then swapping just the heads is going to result in some mangled valves. Does anyone know if I'm barking up the wrong tree?

thanks,

chris
