I'm pretty annoyed to say the least...only 47k miles on the car with FSSH!

Any advice or experiences appreciated.

I had this happen to my MY96 sti 2 with 62k on the clock. The most annoying bit was trying to source the 3rd gear which because of it being an import was bloody expensive! I decided to have it rebuilt and while the guy was doing it replaced the bearing on the shaft and the syncro ring on 3rd too. Was bloody expensive but worth it to have it done right!

IMHO you dont know what you are getting with a 2nd hand/reconditioned box!

Should be able to get a secondhand UK box from a breakers for around £400-£500 depending on age/condition. Rebuilt/reconditioned boxes will be more, but may be worth it if supplied with a warranty.

You'd have to weigh up the costs and time involved in getting your own rebuilt before deciding which option was preferable. At least UK ratios will be relatively easy to source.

If you know what you're doing you can strip, repair and rebuild the box yourself, but it's a bit more than the average Sunday tweaker's job, and needs a couple of unusual tools.

Suggest you give APIDavid a ring on 01926 614522 before going any further. If nothing else, you may be able to source a good rebuilt box from him.

Would anyone of the gearbox companies do an exchange....in order to reduce the price, and rid me of the wreckage???

I'm starting to see pound-signs now!! This is gonna be expensive!

Everything's relative, it's not worth having a coronary about it. Think you might find that API would have your old unit in exchange, as I believe would Grade A Subaru (www.gradea-subaru.co.uk).

If you got a local garage to perform the switcheroo for you, expect them to charge out at somewhere between four and six hours labour.

It cost me £650 to have it rebuilt which included the £50 (i was lucky enough to find a 2nd hand perfect 3rd gear). Most of this was labour which was 12 hours of it!
