I have been using Mobil1 in my cars and customers cars for years and have never heard of any problems as yet.
It all boils down to cost and how frequent you change the oil.
I personnally change my oil every 6000 miles regardless..

Ok I changed MY00 Scoob from Magnatec ( this was being used originally) to Mobil1 and noticed a major difference with the engine sound. It sounded a lot more noisier sort of clattery (for want of better words) changed the oil again at 3000 miles for Motul 300V and WOW the engine has quietened down and feels smoother etc.
I know Mobil1 is one of the recommended brands but I will be sticking to Motul from here onwards - Just my 2 pennies worth.

Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 motor sport 15-50W.
There will be a difference as the motorsport is "thicker"
this will also explain why the motul makes the engine quieter.
I think motul may also be about 15-50w.
Mobil 1 would not be ok for trackdays etc where as motorsport would.

Sorry should have stated - I was using Mobil1 Motorsport - 15/50 from Halfords. Had the same thing with my pre MY93 WRX - again the car felt and sounded much smoother on the Motul 300v and yes I use the 15/50 Motul too
Motul is the way to go,i ran my old MY01 on Mobil 1 moltorsport from new and it sounded much better when i switched to Motul 300V.
They are the same viscosity but the Motul made the car run much better, dont ask me why but it was definately noticeable.

I have it on very good authority that Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 protects your engine as well as anything you could use. If you can get hold of it easily, don't feel like you have to go out of your way or pay extra for Motul.

i would'nt recomend mobile 1 15/50 for track day, ive only used it once about 2 years ago and wont be using it again, i prefer redline 15/50 and motul 15/50. ive also used castrol rs 10/60 which is ok

So what negative experience did you have with it during that track day that would lead you not to recommend it? Did your engine blow up? Were your oil pressures down?

GM,
was fine on the road, but after a half day on track at donno, (about 30 laps, allways do about 5/6 laps and come in to pit for 30 minutes) oil pressure droped quite a bit, cant remember how much, had only put the oil in the day before (mobile 1 15/50) even the cheaper valvoline oil is better than the mobile 1 stuff. i allways thought very highly of the mobile 1 oil, and had used it in other cars, before i got into subarus. maybe they have changed it now, is there there 2 version of the 15/50 ? is there motorsport version new? cant remember which one i used but there was only one available when i brought it.
i have found the motul and redline 15/50 to be best, no drop in oil presure even after a whole day on track. the castrol RS10/60 was very good too with hardly any drop after a hard drive in the peak district then whole day at donno.

I found Mobile 1 Motorsport 15W50 better than the semi synthetic the dealer used to use but then tried Motul 300V competition 15W50 and I will not put Mobil 1 near the car again now.. it was so so much better..
I too have used it in other cars before the Subaru's and noticed no problems but monitor things in a lot more detail these days etc
The drop in pressure you saw Mikee just highlights that further..

Curious. If it was generally as bad in a high stress environment as your experiences suggest, I doubt Prodrive would suggest it for use in a WRC car. Certainly never seen anything similar myself, and, TBH, can't tell the difference between Motul and Mobil in the car.

GM,
I definitly noticed a difference..
Don't Mobil 1 sponser the WRC cars??
I know the WRC cars alot of the stuff is very good that they use but the engines are rebuilt very frequently etc... I know if the engine fails they lose the rally but oil is probably changed at every stage so it only need perform for a short time..
I find the Motul is very sticky and takes a while to fully drain out of the car, where as the mobil 1 just ran out.. the motul just seems to cling more where needed.. could all be in my head but the car is definitly smoother on motul.

On most occasions the cars will do the whole rally on the same oil.

That doesn't mean all the works WRC and F1 teams do though. Has definitely been the case in the past that some teams have had one manufacturer's stickers on the cars (and the oil can) and another brand altogether actually in the sumps.
I was told that that slicker 50 stuff is a good thing to put in with oil and have done so a few moth ago.
Im looking to chance to motul 300 this month. Should i put that slicker stuff in?
Where can i get it from> Halfords etc?
I think its called slicker 50. Cant remember
