Selecting first ... after reverse ..

Just picked up an MY00 wagon. 1 year old, 12K miles.
Seem to have a bit of a problem selecting first after reverse, anybody suggest anything or is this normal? (Maybe just practice needed?)
I'll try explaining ..
If you start the car (neutral) then select first it goes in clean.
Start the car, select reverse (do reversing
) then engage clutch and try and select first it's quite difficult.
The best explanation I can give is when moving the gearstick out of reverse it does not return to the common neutral position .. i.e. it won't waggle freely (it is in neutral though as I can disengage the clutch).
A bit of shuffling about will get the gearstick in the 'waggling position' and then first is stiff but easy to select.
This happens irrespective of a cold start or after a longish drive (so not cold/warm gearbox oil issue).
If this is normal I'm not worried it's maybe just a knack I need to figure out.
Anybody any ideas?

i think the trick is mentioned in the manual..
Basically it says something like after reverse, if you have difficulty selecting first, go to neutral, lift clutch, then clutch in again, then first.
This happens occasionally on mine as well (99 uk) but is not that bad.

Maybe didn't explain it that well, I am selecting reverse, selecting neutral, disengage clutch, re-engage clutch then trying first.
When I disengage the clutch after reverse it 'feels' as though the box is not quite in neutral, it takes a bit of jiggling for this to happen.
Does this sound familiar?
