Question

As some may know I recently bought John Banks 97/P 406 3.0 V6 (73k miles) and it seems to be behaving a little strange. It was fine when I got it for the first few days and having discussed it with John we've both drawn a blank as to what is up.

The symptoms are as follows: In general day to day driving it seems to be fine. However when you floor (WOT) it in 1st or 2nd the car instantly lurches forward (no lag remember) but then loses power for 1/2 a second before shooting off down the road again. Power seems a little inconsistent between 2-3k rpm as well. Also of note is that the engine used to come on 'cam' at 4k rpm with a nice change in power and also engine note. This is now happening at 5k rpm in every gear so the performance of the car is blunted. It also likes to try and stall at slow speeds in 1st or reverse but I don't know the car well enough to know if she's just wanting more gas. I wouldn't have thought so though given how cleanly she pulls from low revs in high gears.

I'll be putting the car in for a service asap but I'd appreciate any theories on what is wrong with it so I can point the garage in the right direction.

Cheers

I don't know enough technically to know. If it was just a misfire why is it only when you deck the throttle but never after that or on part throttle?

As for flat spots its defo not a characteristic of the engine there is something wrong.

Fuel surge?

Well think about it, you say it only happens when you accellerate hard at 5k RPM.

I know he is in Dunfermline, but Job Gevers of Automotive services is a Bosch/PSA expert and would get to the bottom of this for you as well as being a good choice for the service. Having hunted around for good auto diagnosticians this man appears to be in a league of one in this area. Amongst independents he is one of the few to have the right equipment to diagnose faults - when the ABS was problematic his plug in equipment gave far more info than the older wire in stuff competitors had. No connection with him, highly suggest a call though 01383 738077

A dodgy fuel pump relay on my old BM gave similar symptoms to those described. Might be worth a look.

Spoke to him this morning and he was very helpful He instantly thought of about 10 things it might be so it seems a head under the hood or more likely a gizmo in a diag port is the way to go
