My first one too, i've never had a car old enough (or before that long enough) to have an MOT.

I've still got a cat in the downpipe, do I need to do anything to help it pass? Is optimax better for emmisions?

It's going to fail on tyres i think, tyre place said they are right on the legal limit - but i have 4 new Goodyears booked for after lunch

Newish car, "should" pass Ok, dont think fuel matters that much on emission. Suggest you just walk round the car to make sure all the lights, indicators, brake lights etc work (if you are on your own back the car up to a garage door at night and check the brake lights in the mirror).
Also make sure the washer bottle has some water in it & that the wiper blades are in good nick.
Apart from those basic checks just book it in & see what happens.

If you see some of the pieces of **** that can pass you really dont need to worry

If you are running a standard ECU with one cat then you should be ok on the emiisions front.
