My mate has just bought a T-reg STI 5 Type-R, the thing is it does not have the adjustable diff, it has the diff dial on the dash but a blank next to the handbrake where it should be, should they all have adjustable diff or was it optional or has this one had a gearbox replacement.

STI will have a red-top engine and STI Intercooler, the WRX will not have.

If it has the red-top manifold, STi i/C and no ABS, then I would say it is an STi, and has had the dial removed. Can't think why though?

I think you are right, if the gearbox has been replaced would it mean it would not work or could it be put back.

There are a number of scenarios that could explain this car appearing the way it does. It could be that it's a WRX Type R that's had an STi instrument panel (complete with centre diff indicator) transplanted in.

Could also be that it's an STi Type R that's had its DCCD removed (or the gearbox swapped), but in that case, why remove the thumbwheel but leave the dashboard? Incidentally, do any of the lights in the diff indicator panel come on when the ignition is turned on?

The best way to find out what the car was originally supposed to be would be to pull the applied model code off and check it against the list on the SIDC FAQ.

I thought all the Type R's were either WRX RA or WRX STi (1 to 6 with various V Limited editions) - I didn't think there was a WRX Type R (the SIDC FAQ doesn't show one)

Alrite guys

I might be able to shed some light on this subject!

This is one of my friends old cars. I know this for a fact coz the number plate is his private one that is shown in your link pictures!

The car (before he bought it) had a different gearbox put it - or so he told me. I have also come across the guy who had the gearbox changed.

When my friend had the car it seemed to be in excellent condition and the only reason he was getting rid (Didnt even know if he defo had!!) was because a) he changes his car a lot and b)due to not needing a car for a couple of months.

I contemplated buying it myself (although never never made and offer!) but decided to keep mine due to the DCCD still being on my car!

I hope this answers any questions

Cheers

Looks like an STi Type R (or a fantastic imitation mocked up from a WRX type R).

Can only assume that the wheel was removed for some reason. Maybe worth removing the handbrake surround and looking for any associated gubbins that are not plugged in! Should think you could pick up the Wheel (if the electrics are there) from somewhere like grad a.
