It sounds like your ISC (Idle Speed Control) valve has died.

You can sometimes clean them up by squirting a can of Carb Cleaner into the feeder pipe, whilst running the engine at approx 2000 rpm. This isn't always successsul though.

We, and most other servicing companies, have got some used ones in stock. Give one of us a ring if the carb cleaner doesn't do it.

Thanks for replying,
i've had the idle speed control valve off and i've cleaned it up, it had a bit of carbon deposit on it ..thing is it was doing this before and its still doing it.
Is there a switch that tells the idle valve when to come in?
What I mean is, could this be faulty and therefore its telling the idle valve to come in at the wrong time, which is then causing
it to stall?
would my fault code not show the code for the idle valve....I don't know but do you know if this is hoe it works ?
thanks again

Unhappy

Im having a bit of a problem with a 93MY WRX
(GC8A48D)cutting out.It sometimes happens when slowing down approaching a junction or when moving off from a standstill.
It also happens when driving normaly...
i've reset the ecu and i'm getting fault code
42 (four long, two short) This,as far as I can tell from "Glens website" is 'idle-switch,idle switch signal is abnormal'.
Could someone please tell me where this idle switch is ??
Is it controled by the TPS?

The car is very hard to restart after it cuts out, it'll crank over but not fire,if
I loosen the two screws on the idle air control valve and "wiggle" it (for want of a better term) it'll start fine ...untill the next time it cuts out again!
The thing is, it doesn't do this all the time
sometimes not for a week or so, and sometimes every 5 minutes..

can anyboby help me with their thoughts on this ? Has anybody ever had a similar problem? i guess not as I tried a search before posting this...
I'd be very grateful if anyone would reply and enlighten me as to where the idle switch is, and how it could be causing this problem.

thanks
Dub.

I encountered code 24 before, earlier this year on a MY94. Same symptom of engine stalling during hard braking or slowing down. Did exactly what Pete said - spraying *A LOT OF* carb cleaner into the feeder pipe while keeping the engine running. Removed a huge amount of gunk. Fault code disappeared and engine has never stalled again since.
