How to tell if the car is 'pinking'

Never posted in the technical section! always do it in the General section (oo-er!) anyway.
I've got a MY94 WRX Wagon with Full HKS SuperDrager exhaust, HKS Green mushroom induction kit thingy.
How can I tell if it is 'pinking'? (a mate asked and I said I was not sure)
I *know* that knockLink would tell me but I'm after a quick fix rather than fitting a KnockLink (though I'll probably get one fitted at a later date)
so, how can one tell? could one get any info from boost gauge (yeah, yeah, daft Idea I know)

Yes, you can get info from the boost gauge... a decent analogue boost gauge will tell you a)the level of boost/vaccumm in the manifold and b) the rate of change and stability of this charge. Nothing about det though, unless the ecu retards the boost and you spot this.
If you want to check your engine for det, but don't want to buy a knocklink... I would recommend you took the car to a good rolling road and have it checked on the rollers, and possibly on the road as well with some det-cans. Powerstation are good at uncovering det on their rollers. Bob Rawle can check for det on the road, if you would prefer that.

You need to use det' cans, regardless, of whether or not it's on the rollers, or the road. If det' is audible to the naked ear, it's a bit late.
