Sounds familiar. Not saying this is the problem but do a search under 'piston slap' and all will be revealed. I do stress you may not be suffering from this but if you read the topics you find you may be able to draw your own conclusion.

Sean,

I too have a MY93 WRX which appears to be noisy in the mornings (and some extent even when warm compared to a friends Catalunya that has had the short engine replacement only 15000 miles ago)

I had this checked at Stamford Gargage (Subaru Manchester) and he seems to think that its no great problem (bit of piston slap when cold that has to be present as the piston expand so much when warm) and that they tend to be noisy than UK cars anyway. Also consider the age of the car, its seven years old now and you can't expect it to be wisper quite. Although I wouldn't mind that.

I'm quite happy to live with it, just keep the oil changed regularly and i don't think you'll have any probs.

Also i considered trying to see if my third party warranty would possibly cover it. It seems that they would only pay if the engine was stripped down and inspected. They would probably then say 'oh its only normal wear and tear' and leave me with a huge bill for the dismantling and reassemby of the engine, not a nice thought.

Have it check out by a specialist, but i think you'll get the same answer as me. I'll be interested to see how you go on, so let me know!

Thumbs up

Tone,

Thanks for the advice, Im taking down to the dealer I got the car from to see if he can advise me on it or if I can get my third party warranty to cough up some cash (some hope!!) Have you had any mods done on yours as Im looking at spending some cash more cash on it...Im having the K+N induction kit and scorpion exhaust fitted hopefully in the next couple of weeks but was looking at what to do next.....

Ill let you know the outcome anyways.

Sean,

No mods as yet, i've only had mine for 2 months so still deciding (as well as trying to get only the little probs sorted out .. suc as coolant leak, squeaky clutch master cylinder ... etc!)

The car came with an uprated clutch, big bore exhaust (havn't a clue what sort) and quite a few STi bits (strut brace, wheels etc.). I'm thinking of going the K+N rote soon so lets us know how yours is when you get it fitted.

Good luck with the engine,

Tone.

It could also be a hydraulic tappet sticking?
