Thumbs down

The speedo on my 93WRX has packed in. It was reading odd for a couple of days, but has now given up all together. Around the same time(cant be sure, was to busy enjoying myself at northern meet 3)the check engine light came on, and car went into limp mode. After reseting the ECU and getting error code 34 (i think, will check again) the car seemed to be ok, until 5 mins down the road when it happened again. Is there any chance the speedo fault could be causing this?
Thanks

MTR
Sorry forgot to mention the speedo fault, as i thought it wasn't relavant but thanks for the advice on resetting, much appreciated.

Phil C.

Update...
I now know this is the problem(thankfully nothing serious) however i checked the speedo cable, and it runs near to the turbo and a bit too close to the exhaust (bpm twin dump). At this point the cable has melted where it has been touching, but not melted right through, is it mechanical or are there electrical wires in there as well? Also are these cables available( speedo dial to small speed converter box?)

Clarey, It's the speedo cable for sure, mine broke after it was installed incorectly. Speedy cables at 0171 226 9228 (is that now 0207 or 0208 dialling code ??)Should be able to help, cable, gearbox etc was only £99 all in. Failing that Lockyear Cars can do you a cable and replacemnt box for about £130 fitted. If your cable gets too hot, the gearbox can jam, the inner cable tries to keep turning and usually twists of one of the end connectors/unions.

Mike Tuckwood at scoobymania helped me with a 2nd hand one..maybe he can help you if cost is too high.

ps. Check Engine comes on as there is a speedo sensor which alerts the ECU if the spedo is disconnected or defective..thats why it came on..fix the cable and the problem magically disappears

Good luck

Exclamation

Ive just been looking, and disconnected the cable from the converter box and found that the melted plastic/rubber around the cable has probably jammed the cable, as it started to turn after a twist with some pliers and some oil. I have pulled it out from the speedo and it appears to be in one piece, however in my haste i forgot how the clip went to re-secure it back. As it has gone dark now i will be trying again in the morning(and probably all day).

Thanks to everyone for your help, i would have lost without it.

P.S does anybody else's speedo cable run close to the turbo and exhaust? I will be using some ties or clips to hold it away in future.

Clarey,

hope you got the clip back in,

pull the cable as far away as possible, mines located right next to the brake pipes, just under the heatshield on the brake master cylinder..
