ok having changed my car 3 x recently in the space of 2 months, i feel im finally at my last decision. I have had my01 wrx for about 3 weeks now, and have test driven a wrx sti recently and really want to change for one. There was imho no comparison between my wrx and the sti i drove, and it wasnt even pppd yet. The one i have spotted is gonna cost me another 8k ontop of the 14k i have in my car, i am pretty much even with all the sums and money in the car, so i know i stand to lose a little but not to much, thats not my worry. I wonder is it really worth keeping the wrx for a year, adding ppp and quickshift, spending like 2k, then selling it for like 4k less than i paid for it in a years time, they do seem to depreciate quickly, i know you pay for the grin factor, and recently finding the time to drive at any possible opportunity, i know ill be sticking with my scoob. I guess i have read up alot and dont have any definative answers as to whether or not a wrx with ppp will be anywhere in comparison, some people say it will, some say it wont, i dont want to spend the 2k only to be unsatisfied and then end up losing that money and buying an sti anyway. I realise i dont have any really specific questions, but i just keep running it over in my head and cant make a decision, so anyone else been in the same dilema and what did you do? I dont have 8k to throw away, but i can manage to get it if i want to go ahead, but doing the upgrades then changing the car is really out of the question as far as i can see

thanks

Jason - sounds like you've got the money and you won't be happy until you've got the best so go for a brand spanking new STi and get it PPP'd with Prodrive spring kit.
I couldn't decide between std STi 8 (didn't have budget to fit PPP) or WRX 03 with PPP.
The first thing to think about is that I don't think the WRX 01 will give you the same performance as an 03 WRX with PPP, I believe 20bhp down. The STi is also the flag ship model with better street cred but IMHO you need to fit a spring kit because the standard car is really harsh, it sort of bounces and juddders over the bumps but with PPP it's awesome.
Having said all that I bought the WRX 03 with PPP because for 21k ish the car is about the same performance as a std STi and actually due to gear ratios, weight, quicker spool up etc it's 0-60 time is not far of an STi PPP - 4.8 seconds according to Prodrive, the car also pulls hard from lower revs than the STi although it runs out of steam quicker. It's a smoother ride and a great alrounder.

Evo magazine apparently rated the 03 WRX PPP as the car to have but you're looking at 01 so if you're wanting the dogs do dars the STi and deep pockets for the upgrades it should be! (also mpg worse - obviously!)

thanks, if i had about 14k in my pocket i would be getting the brand new sti@25k + 2k for upgrading ppp, but i dont have that much money, the sti i looked at was a my02 with ppp already fitted and just about broke me if you know what i mean moneywise! But you have given me some insights into performance, and i think you are right that im never gonna be satisfied till i get the best, the problem i wonder is, 2 weeks into the sti, will i be wanting a porsche or something bigger, better more expensive, i wonder where it ends, will the sti bring ultimate satisfaction lol

STi 02 PPP would be a great car - I guess it's the flag ship Subaru of that year you can buy. I wouldn't want a Porsche anyway but each year as Subaru bring out better faster models etc then maybe that would turn my head?
After a certain point the improvements are minimal though, like you said in your first post - the STi was much better than the 01 WRX.
Go for it mate - but than just be happy you've got one of the best rated cars on the road!! (alot of what you read about this an that model or make of car being this much faster better etc is often just marketting b@ll@cks or biased because the author ownes one - opinions are like @rse holes, everyones got one!!) spend yer hard earned dosh on what you like and enjoy.
