With the cold weather, I have noticed when the engine is cold loads of white smoke coming from the exhaust. And I mean loads. Looks like a 007 smoke screen. Also a pretty horrible smell.

I did not notice any smoke before the Scoobysport downpipe and mid-section was fitted. Is this normal? Do the cats normally catch this stuff? I thought the cats only became active when "fired-up" i.e. hot ?

Cheers,

Gethin.

Is the downpipe lagged as the smell maybe coming from the dampness being subsequently dried by the warming pipe?

Not sure about your smokescreen though...sure its not just the condensation (silly question perhaps )

I get the smoke screen effect on damp mornings like today! Loads and loads, until it has warmed up!

I have a ScoobySport downpipe and backbox, and have always just written it off as steam! Maybe I should check again!!

No dodgy smells (except fromt he driver!), but my downpipe isn't lagged!

Hmm....

No lagging on my pipes either

When it's really cold...I still get the smoke screen even when temp gauge is in the middle...until I drive at least 7 miles or so....

Must be water vapour then!!

Same again, mines a 93 WRX with downpipe, was just as bad before downpipe though.

I am convinced it is steam, not smoke, no bad smell though. It is a lot I agree, especially when reversing through it!

I try not to worry!

Regards Richie.

The downpipes (any exhaust in fact)always smell badly when new. The "smoke" is definatley water vapour IMHO, my car is just like this, clouds every where for about 4 miles or so. Worse if you drive in traffic stop/start.
