Cutting out at 4 thou revs ?? :o(

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp !
Anyone had problems (seems to be in last couple of weeks since the damps setting in) with sudden engine cut for a split second at 4.5k in 4th accelerating...? Hopefully not an expensive one.. any ideas.. happened twice in the last week, put the first down to having gone down to fumes the day before !!
They prone to fuel pump probs ?
Its a '97 Uk car, 66K miles.
