Smoke around turbo heat sheild
Hi
Anyone out there know what this could be - While sitting in traffic yesterday I could smell and see white smoke from under bonnett.
Under bonnet investigation showed smoke coming from inside the turbo heat sheild. This problem [appears] to send oil through the exhaust on first starting up but no smoke is present after a couple of 'rev-ups'.
Dealers assure me it is ok to drive - any opinions? They reckon it could be driveshaft grease dripped onto the turbo.
Car is early MY98 UK Turbo.
Please help - am I worrying over nothing?
Thanks in advance
Paul

Paul,
It definately is oil. But if there's driveshaft grease, then the driveshaft boot isn't secured properly. What else, maybe the oil pipe isn't tightened or worse, the oilseal inside the turbine is leaking at the exhaust or inlet side. Remove the charge hose to see if there's any oil stain on the compressor housing.
