Hi !

A garage in germany told me that the gearbox of the MY98 Turbo is not so good for more horse power (tuning) like an 96,97 and 99 gearbox !
Because the MY98 gearbox is not so strong like the others !
The garage also told me that the gearbox of an M98 Turbo is the same like an series Impreza,only with other transmission ratio !

I cant believe this !
So can anybody tell me if this is true ??!
And why ????

I also own a MY98, I'm not sure the gearbox is super strong either. I would suspect that it's torque capacity is ok - The UK MY98 turbo gearbox isn't shared with any other (non turbo) model (I'm pretty sure...).

I would imagine that there is sufficient headroom to turn the boost up quite a bit before problems emerge - how often is the engine going to be producing peak power and torqe under normal driving in any case?

There have been doumented problems with 1st and 2nd gears breaking up on Australian heavily tuned drag racers, but for road use it should be fine. I beleive the australian racers crack test the gears, and then shot-peen them to resolve the problems.

As I understand it, the gearboxes will be rated on TORQUE not power. So as long as the torque is not going to be too much greater than it was before then you'll be okay.

Of course some components will be speed limited due to lubrication (i.e. bearings) but it's unlikely that you'll be raising the engine too much to bother it.

A final thought - since the std Impreza is a non-turbo with very modest torque it is highly inlikely that the turbo car would share the same gearbox since turbo cars have very high torque outputs. (I could be wrong of course!)

 

Part of the popularity of Evos in Group N rallying is that the standard Subaru gearbox isn't reliable enough.

Whilst these cars are unmodified they are used in rather extreme ways - hence normal use shouldn't be a problem.

If you are tuning the car it might be worth finding the price of a Group A 'box.

Check Amazon for a book called 'tuning WRX' - its got all the gearbox codes, ratios and diff details. Thats how I knew I could swap my VB3FA for a VB3AA box without worrying about the diffs bein different. If u cant be arsed with that - gimme a shout with ur box code and I'll check it for u.
