98 / 97 RON SUL
#1
Hi,
Reading the previous post reminded me to mention this.
I noticed a little while ago that BP swiched the SuperGreenUL from 98RON to 97RON and the standard from 97 to 96. The guy at the cash desk mumbled something about EU regulations and that it didn't actually change the RON grade. An e-mail to BP had a absolutly no response, so just wanted to check if anyone else noticed it and whether any of the other branded forcourts are selling 97 instead of 98. I mainly use BP as my company kindly supplies me with a fuel card, but I can use Shell as well, and will probably do so more often if the grade is better. Bit I suspect that it's been reduced too. Of course, the price didn't come down...

This is an old topic. The UK Government reduced all Superunleaded to 97 RON in Nov 99 without telling anyone. This has serious implications for imported Subarus who were designed to run on 100 RON.

Dunno if it's breaking the law, but it's certainly wrong. All SUL is 97 RON since the end of last year. Most garages seem to have changed the RON rating marked on the pumps but some still have the old labels on.

Nimbus - normal unleaded has ALWAYS been 95 RON - see above post for the same comment!
The only reason they reduced SUL to 97 was because the oil companies said it would be *uneconomic* to make a 97 RON (LRP - same RON as leaded)and 98 RON (SUL). So the government let them drop to a common base of 97... see Morays comment above where he says the same thing but in less words!
