Phil - long time no see ! not doing the M4 these days ! (remeber that?)

YES YES & YES that is EXACTLY the problem !
In the end (under warenty) they replaced the entier throttle body and that rectified the problem. I susspect tho - that its the TPS thats naffed & doesnt always return to 0 100% of the time.

Its weird that blip blip. but as you say, an ECU pwr down (key off until the ecu drops out) resets the condition and its all ok !

they actually placed the netural switch in the gearbox, the solenioid (as if that would make it stop - stupid dealers!) but in the end , throttle body.

if deffinatly an error & SHOULD NOT be ticking when on idle.
not sure how you could resolve it, apart from changing the TPS, or throttle body.

cheers
Steve

edited to add - in normal opperation, when you crack open the throttle it should start ticking (@96% duty cycle), then as you start going higher in the rev's & load etc, it lowers and changes this rate to control the boost. basicly, the higher the duty cycle the more boost it bleeds off from the actuator - thus making the turbo spool more. so, as say 5k revs @ WOT it might be clicking at 60% (on my TD04) - not that you'd hear it !! hence why it's only noticable when u stop, or the engine is stoped (as the ECU stays energised for approx 2 secs after the ignition is pwred off)

When I slow down to stop I have a tick ticking noise coming from the offside of the engine bay. Sound like car keys clicking together in ignition barrel (if that makes sense) but isn't obviously
Anyone any ideas as it is starting to p##s me off a wee bit

Could be the brake pipes near the bulk head, there should be a clip that holds them in place.

my old MY99 started off as a tick on idle once warm. Over a few months it turned into a rhythmical din, which the dealer though was big end gone.

Yes it was that bad. After taking the engine apart they couldn't find a problem.

It turned out to be the timing chain tensioner I think- about a £100 part. It unfortunately cost them £1000's to take it apart due to mis-diagnosis......thank god for warranty (Belgian I might add!)

Don't panic
my MY97 has done it ever since i've had her.

If you lift the bonnet you will see/hear it comes from that think fitted on the Damper thing!! I believe its called the WasteGate solnoid.
I took it my dealer when i first had the car.. 4years ago.
He knew what it was.. Said the week before he had change one on the Police scoob in Nottm.
In his honest opinion. its was nothing to worry about.
If i wanted to throw £65 away changing it he said he's let me LOL

4 years on i still have it.. mainly in warm weather. after turning engine off it last for aboyt 5 secs.

I'm not going to worry about it nor should you. lol

If you want a pic of it.. just ask.

Phil

the wastegate solenoid should NOT tick when on idle or when the engine is switched off.
if it does - u have a problem elsewhere - such as the TPS.

had this on mine - well anoying! and if you left it when it did it on idle for 5 mins - then tried pressing the gas all you got was a constant BLIP ... BLIP ... BLIP ....

try it !

scooby duck????
so if you let your engine warm up.. and its ticking.. and you press the gas the car blips?
you mean revs and stops... revs to about 1.5k.. and thats it?
I have had it do that... all it would rev to is 1.5k.. no more.. even with foot to the floor.
turned off.. and re statred the car.. and it reved fine then.

the ticking i have is clearly from that thing....
you can see it on the left hand side of the pic here...just above the K&N end of the filter.. its only about 3" long.. a cylinder shape and looks like it has a glden clear resin top.

is taht it?.. as that is what TICKs on my car.. you cabn even feel it ticking when it is TICKING! lol

It is the boost solonoid
Mine ticks constantly when warm and gets faster as you increase the revs

But this doesn't sound like the original posters problem
