Question

Just checked my gearbox oil level after a short drive back from work and there is only a tiny amount of oil on the dip stick! Are you supposed to let the engine cool down before checking the level? The car changes gear without any problems.

Just recently bought the car. W reg Turbo 2000

Also the power steering fluid is almost black, should this be replaced? Not had any problems with steering either

Thanks

You are supposed to check the gearbox and engine oil levels with the car cold, and parked on a level surface.

If the oil is right down the bottom of the 'box dipstick, it's too low, period. You should always aim to keep it right up with (or maybe a bit higher than) the upper hole. You'll need a quality 75W/90 gear oil from your local motoring emporium.

PAS fluid shouldn't be minging, no. Should be replaced every 30,000 miles/two years IIRC.
