hi all quick query over replacement head unit.

just bought Alpine 9812RB, and it talks about power/fuse from the battery.

anyone know if i need to run a new power cable or, presumably, when i remove the old unit i can just plug in the new one?

doulbe din unit on MY03.

any help appreciated

You can get a cable convertor that take the subaru wiring loom to ISO standard so it plugs directly into the car, 5 mins work to change the radio ...

there seems to be a mini sort of wiring loom with the stereo (including a fuse box!) - presumably the ISO convertor plugs into that, which then plugs into the stereo?

Ideally you should run to the battery like the manual says.

I've also got a 9812RB - if I remember rightly there's a separate power lead coming from the Alpine connection block and NOT going to the ISO connector.

The manual specifically says NOT to take power from behind the dash.

When I went to get cable and fuse from Halfords they were very surprised (to say the least) that Alpine insist on this method of wiring. They said they've never wired a head unit in that way.

Not being too technical myself, I think you need to run the extra oomph directly from the battery if you drive the sub direct, rather than a seperate amp.

I'm sure someone will make more sense than me on this, but mine says that too.

More seriously, the new range of alpine units with more powerful internal amps want this. If something is supposed to be "4x60W", then it could be drawing up to 20A. That's a lot of juice to take from a radio circuit and alpine have done the safe thing and assumed that the loom can't take it. The worst that should happen is a blown fuse.

Well, I was kind of right!

Do you find that on that Alpine it cuts out when you make the speakers fart too much?? (OK, I know I need to replace them!)

You could tap into a main feed behind the fuse box or on the steering column. If you can solder the connection, will be easier than running new from the battery.

If you open the bonnet and look at the bulkhead on the right hand side roughly where the glove bow would be behind there's a large grommet that you can, with the help of lots of fairly liquid, get another wire through.

Its a good idea to run a separate feed from the battery if you've got a high power amp in your head unit as Chiark says - especially in a scoob.

If you look at the wiring loom in the dash of a classic (don't know what bug eyes-'n'-on's are like) the stereo loom is a joke!

The copper cores must be so thin, I'm surprised they don't have bloody fires!!!
