Have owned my RB5 for 6 months and have an annoying intermittent whine on my gearbox in 4th and fifth upto about 70mph. Its only there under load, disappearing completely when backing off but coming back fully when you just touch the accelerator. Seems to be worse after hard driving.

Is still under warranty and subaru have test driven and heard the noise. However, they say if they cant actually find anything they'll have to charge me for 10 hrs labour at least.

Anyone had anything similar? Anyone have any ideas? What do you reckon are the chances of them finding anything?

Also have a thrusting between 2-3000rpm as the car is warming up from stone cold. Also annoying but disappears after a few minutes and wont do it in a subaru techs. company for some reason???!!!

Thanks...

had similar on my MY99 turbo. It was the centre diff bearing got it done under warranty. these noises are very hard to trace. in my case mechanic lay in car and had his head near gearbox then diff whilst i drove. hope this helps.

Could be synchros, but most likely to be maybe the drive pinon bearing.

As for the hesitation from cold, almost all Subarus develop that
