One of the first task if you want to replace your cam timing belt is to remove the crankshaft pulley. I have heard on several different methods. How did you do ?

1. Used the Subaru special pulley wrench (499977100) to lock the crankshaft.
2. Just unscrew it without any need to lock the Crankshaft
3. Use a air powered impact tool to unscrew
4. Used a normal spanner with a long handle, allowing it to rest against the ground, and turned the starter to rotate the engine.
5 Or..

I prefer no. 1 but do not have the special tool, anyone have made one himself or has a picture of it?

I like the idea of 1, but I broke the special tool I tried to make, so resorted to plan B - putting the car in 5th and having someone stand on the brakes while I heaved on the bolt with a suitable bar.

 

I will second the 5th gear and mate on brakes method.

 

Very dull if you are the mate on the brakes

It may work for some people but dont be the person who say 'wish i hadnt done that'

Best of all get someone else to do it while you watch, they are a real pain to remove even with the correct tool.

Please make sure you use loctite or similar when you put it back on, because the bolt comes loose very easy even at the manufacurers torque rating.

Driving down the road and thought I wonder where those belts came from in my rear view mirror, I worked it out very quickly when I went to take the next corner!!! look mum no power steering

 

What we on number 6?

remove start motor and place a 4inch length of angle iron on the flywheel against the casing.. get someone to hold it whilst you undo crank bolt.. Worked for the flywheel bolts..

But I suspect I would go with the 5th gear and someone on the brakes method..

or when changing the cambelt on my wifes Corsa freeze in amazement and shock when it comes up done with not enough pressure to turn the engine ... lucky this was the first thing I did with the car when we bought it..
