Legacy gearbox problems - stuck in 2nd

A relative's Legacy 2.5GX estate (1999 I think) jumped out of gear without warning one evening, but went back in fine. The next day the gearbox became stuck in second, the dealer suspects gearbox problems.
Any chance this could be something simpler like a linkage, clutch cable etc?
