ABS & Air Bag problems
I have a V6 STI , has been in a very light accident and I am repairing.
The ABS and A/B lights are on.
When I brought the car the ABS light was on but the A/B was ok and has never blown.
After the car sat in a paint shop for months getting repaired the A/B light is now on also.
The Subaru dealer was very unhelpful and quoted thousands of dollars to fix this, after pulling out my stereo and consol making a big mess they said the A/B control unit was faulty and had to be replaced, I tried to tell the that the car had not been driven and the A/B light had only just come on but they were not interested.
They also said the ABS had a fault code 52, motor and or relay problems.
The dealer quoted $5000 for new ABS and $3000 for A/B controller.
I asked about repairing the ABS unit and A/B controller and they were only interested in replacing with new.
I asked around and apparently it may be possible to repair the ABS units, some times relay problem can be a simple fix, apparently this model is fitted with a bosh ABS system.
As for the A/B fault I am at a loss as this never had a problem.
Can it be that the dealer has not reset some stored codes.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers
James
From experience with other cars, i can only give you a pointer.
The airbag sensors will be mounted somewhere on the front of the slam panel under the bonnet, there should be one each side, probably held on with one small bolt, and each having 2 wires going into it, check the accident/repair has not disturbed the sensor or wires.
With the ABS
Check each wheel speed sensor and the wires and also the integrity of the wiring, i've not heard many cases of Bosch ABS modulators giving up so again check the connections to the modulator and also all the wires, some could have been cut or pinched in the crash or in the subsequent repair, the modulators are also not to fond of the bolt of power from MIG welders, so try checking the relays for the unit and also the fuses.
In short Bell out all the wires and keep your fingers crossed, otherwise borrow some bits!
Cheers

Id agree with above, having recently upgraded my rear light clusters, i drove the car (only a few yards) without the rear lights connected, the ABS warning light was illuminated. So maybe the wiring to the lights is damaged.
Worth looking into, a decent auto electrician should be able to find any problems.
