how do i "lock" the gbox??

as above ive just striped the gear box to get to 5th gear to replace the syncro,selecta fork,and didnt know ho to lock the gearbox to remove the big nut on the main shaft ive been told to select 2 gears 5th+1st to remove it but i cant!!! please help i need it to go on holiday on saturday........

I would love to help you but really dont have a clue about gearboxes, syncro,selecta forks,or big nuts on the main shaft.
It is Friday now,the gearbox is in bits and without being nasty you dont really know what your doing.
