Question

As you may know, mine has been buzzin like a ******* for a few days now. I thought I could live with it until the weekend, but I can't
Now I enquired around to get it tightened today and learned that it's not that it's come loose, more likely that it's split. Fair enough i think.
As I always do, I speak to a few dealers and they all say something along the lines of, we could replace it under warranty, but in reality, most people have 'em taken of and not replaced because it'll only happen again.
Fair enough, all vehicles have design faults and I for one couldn't give a to55 if i have a heat shield there or not.
Apart from stopping grass/paper/rubbish catching fire, whats the point and by not having one, is the car exposed to unneccesary risk of failiure. I'm pressuming that it's gonna be ok to have it wipped off by the dealer

Mikey, as the downpipe runs close to the intercooler you can get heat soak in slow traffic or when stopped at lights etc. that can cause det if you're unlucky.

But of course you'll be monitoring your AFR, Knocklink, EGT and Intake Temp gauges anyway, won't you?

No way!!! Thanks for the input Notorious, seriously though:

The heat from the downpipe/exhaust still gets to the i/c with the heat shield in place because it is situated above and to the left of the downpipe. How can taking the lower heatshield (Not the one with a hand with a cross through it) off suddenly increase the i/c temp?

AND i REFUSE to believe that taking a heat shield off increases the likely hood of det by any significant amount NO WAY!! Theoretically maybe, but in practice? Nah!!! Not driving to and from work and the odd b road, no way!

Is that the only POSSIBLE minute issue associated with removing the LOWER heat shield then?

I haven't had the lower shield on for over 2 years due to the shield splitting and never had an issue.

Only thing i can think of is protection for the driveshaft gaiter but as said, i've never had a problem.

Left the top one in place though and modified it to suit the numerous variations in turbos i've had on the car cause the heat from the turbo is too close to the brake master cylinder for my liking.

Are you talking about the heatshield that fits over the turbo itself, or the one on the exhaust headers well before the turbo?

If it's the latter, I can't see it having any effect whatsoever, although I think I saw a post the other day where someones Lambda sensor wiring caught fire due to lack of heatshield (although a cable tie would cure that).

For us import owners, we probably run closer to det than UK owners so anything we can do to help the situation is worth it. Added heat not only gets into your I/C but raises intake temps before the I/C so you have a less efficient cooler trying to cool a hotter charge, whilst running on lower RON fuel than is ideal. A recipe for det if ever there was one.

REV (no heatshields, no pipe wrapping, no octane booster, no gauges)

All done

I swear the car is faster now JOKE!!!
Soooo chuffed that that rattle has gone, it was sending me mental.

Here's one for you techies, Without the heatshield for heat to reflect back off of, will the turbo cool quicker/not get as hot and as a result be more efficient?
