I'm a little perplexed as to why the screen won't ever show jet black backgrounds.

eg. when running a game like freelancer, the background is never jet black (deep black) ?

It spoils the game a little knowing the background is never as dark as its meant to be. Dark bbjects, like a planet in shadow, in the foreground appearing on top of this background never 'blend in'

Has anyone else noticed this ?

 

What contrast and brightness lavels you running at? I have to say that mine doesn't bother me much.

 

I'm running at about 40% for each.

Daytime is fine.

But if I turn the lights out, the black background looks very "grey"

You're using a RADEON9700PRO aren't you ? Wonder if that would make any difference? I remember you mentioning how good its display was a while ago.
