Does anybody have any strong oppinions on the use of additive slick 50, Feed back Please.

 

I put it in mine simply 'cos it is £10 from Costco (usually around £20 from car spares). Cant say whether it has improved anything though, but I dont think it has done any harm!

Im curious about what effect if any it would have on turbo bearings etc.

Exactly right Brickboy. Wipe a piece of metal with some oil and then try and get something to stick to it.

Just a thought, but I wonder how much it would cost to coat pistons with ceramic (apart from the general rebuild, that is ).

Supposed to be very good thermally (on the piston crowns -- keeps more heat in the combustion chamber rather than heating up the piston), and for reducing friction (when applied to the skirts).

 

There is a widely distributed article on the web with lots of good reasons not to use Slick 50 -- it's titled "Snake Oil - is that additive a negative?" but basically:

- it doesn't "bond to the metal surfaces" of the engine. If you want to get PTFE to bond, see how Tefal do it on their frying pans. And then see how easy it is to scrape the coating off.

- PTFE particles expand to many times their normal size when heated -- it's a plastic after all. The particles can expand to be bigger than the pores in the oil filter, which partially blocks it.

It has been shown that Slick 50 and other PTFE treatments can cause an oil pressure drop across the filter, because of blockage.

It's your engine, but IMHO you're better off changing your oil more regularly.
