At the moment I am considering importing (Japan) either an EVO6 GSR or Impreza STi 6 Type R. Anyway on this forum there is masses of talk of octane booster. As the maximum I can get is 97RON fuel do I need to worry about octane booster and knocklinks and all that ? I don't want to damage the engine basically. So can I assume there was never any major problem with sourceing the correct fuel or that the highest RON petrol was always used without need for octane booster ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Daz,

The best thing for you to do would be to budget for getting your car's ECU mapped. That way it will run on whatever fuel you want (I would still recommend either Optimax or SUL). You def. can not run the car on 95 RON at all and even 97 RON will result in engine problems if ran at high speeds for prolonged periods. Maybe call BR Developments as they can now do EcuTek maps considerably cheaper than Motec or Gems ECU replacements and I have heard they are extremely good.

I am running an STiV and will be getting the car EcuTek'd in a couple of weeks. I will also be getting a Kock Link as well.

K

Go on son, get the STi6

Japan gets 100 octane fuel and their cars are set up accordingly. This is why there's a need for octance boosters, in particular with imported Japanese cars.

Yeah I know.

The point is by runnning an imported car on anything less than 100RON petrol do I run the risk of actually doing damage to the engine OR will it just result in a minor loss in performance.

I would also asssume as EVOs where never offically released in the UK till the 7, all 6's where imports that they had to run on 98RON and there was never a great deal of fuss mentioned.

Does a scoob differ that greatly ?

It isn't just a performance loss. That's the least of your worries

Can't talk for the EVO's but it will lead to engine problems, resulting in failure if not addressed with Scoob's. Period!

You either run SUL/ Optimax with Octane Booster or get a remap which is a better route I believe...

Daz,

put a search on this site for blown jap engine or something like that. Have a read of the common causes. Might make you think more about that fuel your putting in!!

Thumbs up

Ok - just done the search myself on Blown engines and it didnt give much info - sorry that was crap advice from me.

I lost my jap import engine after a period of running on optimax only. I had had detting problems.

With another engine under the bonnet, i am now only running on optimax plus octane booster. I refuse to drive my car even slightly hard at the minute until i get that Knock link fitted.

Its better to be safe than sorry
