Newbie Questions
Hi,
Im still in the process of sorting out my finances but would like a few opinions on buying a Impreza.
I have seen a Uk300 for Y plate, 18k from a dealer with low mileage - my insure quote for this was £845.00 -25 Years old, 4 years no claims. I thought that was damn good.
My 2nd option was to get W reg Impreza turbo for 14k from a dealer with 26k on the clock - Would this be cheaper to insure than the Impreza UK 300 ??
Also what are the running costs servicing/tyres/petrol consumption for both these cars ?? I dont do that much mileage to and from work although it is mostly city centre driving.
At the moment Iam about £80-£100 a month on petrol, thats in a 1.8 20VT Ibiza Cupra.
Sorry for all the questions,
Cheers
Chris

Well i own a MY99 T-reg UK Turbo. Running cost are quite expensive.
Services every 6mths or 7500miles vary between 200-400quid.
I have needed new tyres every 10,000miles, for Pierelli P-zero's thats bout 500quid.
If ur doing alot of short journey's to and from work then u arent gonna get good mpg either.
I would have thought insurance would be cheaper on the W-reg Turbo.
Having said all this, it is all worth it, if u havnt already, go for a test drive and ur mind will be made up!!
Hope this helps,
Dunc.
ps. the money you save buying the W-reg, u can spend on mods!

Pierelli P-zero's thats bout 500quid.
One of the mods on here is known to refer to them as Pirelli P-Zero Hedge Hunters. It pretty much sums it up.
the UK300 and the W-reg turbo are very different so a lot will come down to your personal preference. I would guess the insurance on the W-reg would be lower but dont really know. £14k sounds like top money for the car. For that I would expect very low mileage, full history and extended warranty, etc.
As for mpg - mine (MY99 with PPP) averages about 230 - 250 miles per £40 tank, doing mostly short journeys.
Servicing as per Dunc. If you go for the W-reg, check whether it has had the cambelt changed as this is very expensive. Also check the discs - I tend to get about 30k miles out of the front discs. If they need doing I would recommend haggling for the car as it is and then replacing with non-Subaru parts, in my case Pagid which are a big improvement.
Agree with tk on the tyres - in the past I have always used yokohama which are very good, last about 10k miles (more on the rear). I currently have P-Zeros and they are lousy in the wet. Plus side is that I cant seem to wear the damn things out! Budget on about £100 per tyre. You can generally pick them up for a bit less if you look around.

It can be possible to do 350mpg if you drive like some of the girls on SN. I am still on the same set of original tyres at 22k on my W reg 'best model' car and the same pads. Is this a record?

Old fart with more ex's than a pools coupon, and I've had more kids than Gary Glitter. I had to keep it under 3K rev's after an engine rebuild at Xmas, and I like the MPG. Tried to keep it there evry since. There are regular occasions though when it is considerably less due to excessive speed.

Cheers for all that info chaps,
Buying the car certainly does seem to be the easy bit, looks like running it would be a bugger though.
Lots of info, stuff that I will remember next time I look about.
Do you think the dealers were selling the cars at the going rate or were they overpriced/under price ??
Guess I will have to stick with the Cupra for another year or so before I get the wifes permission to upgrade, either that or a lottery win.
Cheers folks

Servicing cost £100-£500 dependant on the mileage. Before 2002 cars 7500 miles or 6 month services, 2002 onwards, 10,000 miles or 12 months.
Tyres ~£100 each - I use Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3, have 10,000 so far from them and still looking good ofr about the same again.
Fuel - 60 litre tank, and get between 200 and 300 miles per tank dependant on how hard I drive. I average about 25mpg, but get a spread betwwen 18 and 29mpg for road driving. I do a 4 mile each way commute so no chance to give it some loud pedal as it barely gets warm. (edited to add - If I do a full tank short journeys keeping the revs down to 3000-3500rpm then I get 26-27mpg)
Insurance - Looks good prices. I pay £720, 31yrs, 5+NCB, Advanced driver, no points etc and mod's declared (Norwich Union Direct). About £100 cheaper for no mods, and a further £50-£100 cheaper if I take my car smashin' wife of the policy......
Value - worth every penny for the huge grin I get every time I drive it even if I'm not whipping Scoob into a Petrol Frenzy.
