Question

Anyone know where there are some instructions on how to change the clutch please?

I am after something similar to a Haynes manual type thing so I know whether to pay someone to do it or have a go myself..

Also anyone know a good place for a replacement clutch and whether all the Classic shape impreza clutches are interchangeable?

Cheers

I was hoping www.scoobymods.com would have instructions but a search only returned a few requests for it..

As far as I know, there are 2 sizes of classic clutch. (Pre97 and post 97 IIRC)

I got my last one from www.importcarparts.co.uk but I understand that http://www.autospares-group.com/ are quite reasonable as well (I've used them for quite a few parts now, and I'm very happy with their service, but I've not got a clutch off them...) Both are standard clutches.

I thought about attempting the clutch replacement myself, but chickened out when I saw the amount of work & heavy lifting involved. I got a friendly local mechanic to do mine - he let me help as well, so I ended up doing the heavy lifting bit anyway )

Basically, it's take the IC off to get at the gearbox wire bits, the exhaust off, pop the front lower ball joints off, remove the front drive shafts, unbolt and remove the rear drive shaft, remove loads of crossmember bits...

finally, you can undo the 4 bolts holding the gearbox on and pull it off the car. (Sounds easy, doesn't it! Believe me, even without oil, it's heavy, and the 2 centre studs are boud to have got stuck...)

Pay attention to the condition of the fly wheel. If you've cooked the clutch too mutch, it may have developed cracks.

These aren't compete instructions by any means, as they are going on my memory of about 6 months ago, but they should give you an idea that you'll have lots of bits of car everywhere, and you really need a ramp to do this sucessfully. It took us about 4 to 5 hours.

Oh, I doubt that my local garage will be convenient for you (I live on a little island somewhere ) but Dyney knows someone from Sussex way who I'm told is reasonable.

Thanks,

I keep swinging from doing it myself to getting it done.

I shall have a look at the two websites

Can I give just one tip? Make sure you have someone to help you when it comes to lifting it up or taking the box out. I know some of you guys are built like Arnie but safety is first.
