Hi,i have a impreza wrx sti v5 my99 and have just been informed my turbo is shagged.Was found after car was fitted with full de-cat exhaust. Symptoms were turbo ok when reved up but started to whistle as revs died down,was told cause cat removed could hear noise but with cat on would not be able to hear noise cause it deadens the sound. Turbo was removed found no play in bearings as such but when held of both turbine rotors could move it back n forth.It has been sent away and have been told it is knackered n needs a re-con kit at about £600 + vat and shipment from japan.Rang another place to enquire about re-con turbo he asked wot symptoms were told him, he thinks that turbo ok and that there should be a bit of play back n forth about 1mm.So any advice or help on wether turbo ok or finding a re-con turbo would be greatful, or if someone has a vf28 for sale call 07811983406 .Car was running fine before cat removed apart from gearbox leek and slipping clutch due to it, also found slite oil in intercooler pipe but not enough to pour out just wet finger. To confirm - so it performs OK during spool up, but is loud when you get off the gas?

Any other symptoms?

Shipment from Japan to get the turbo reconditioned??

Where did you send the turbo off to be examined?

Personally I would send it off to Turbo Dynamics and have to construct a hybrid turbo out of it!! Failing that, they should be able to either fix it or sell you a new one!

 

No other problems bar ones mentioned above. Turbo is down at turbo dynamics, shipment was for carriage to n from TD i got mixed up, they can repair it £650 so trying to found another one in its place if n price is right? Steve.

 

Dare I suggest fitting a front entry TD05 for an all round improvement in performance. It will also be rebuildable in future for less than 1/2 that price.
