oversteer?

Hi all,
just a quick question, I don't profess to being an expert at all!
From what I can gather, in a front wheel drive car, to correct lift off oversteer you're supposed to get back on the throttle (but not too much) to make the back sit down a bit more and re-balance the car etc.
Like I say I'm no expert, just asking out of curiosity (and I don't drive an AWD car) but how do you correct a Scooby that has its back end out on limited roadspace? Surely you will end up with a big drift. In fact, is this likely to happen unless you are going at heroic speeds?
I'm a scientist at heart and interested in the physics of it all!
