The U.S. STI specs will be released in a couple of hours at the Detroit auto show. Scuttlebutt has it coming in with a 2.5 liter motor with DCCD for about $32K, likely cloose to 300 horsepower and 300 ft. torque. I will post specs in a couple of hours. Any reaction from you side of the Ocean? Many of us browse your great website. I am partial to the depravity on the Muppet Show.....

You guys likely will get a PPP option to get 300hp/torque. We probably won't get that option, so why wouldn't we want more power than your stock 260hp? Also note Mitsubishi just released EVO 8 here at 2 liters with 271hp/273ft, and Subaru will want to beat that for marketing purposes. Only way likely they could do it would be with a 2.5 on our gas/emissions. We shall see, but everyone is very excited over here about finally getting an STI, especially if it has performance specs equal to the Jap version (2.5 would about equal 2 liter twin-scroll Jap version).

Fantastic! There's a chance me and the wife will go out to the US in the Autumn (fall ) to work for 18 months or so.

I'd be gutted about losing my Scooby but knowing they're over there (in proper form) is great to know. Always wondered how they get the power, thought that the US premium fuel is around 89 - 91 octane?

Only problem I guess will be getting insurance, starting from scratch

If the USA version is a 2.5 litre I will sell everything I own (couple pairs of dirty socks) and move over there....it will be the standard 2 litre turbo....

91 octane is about 95 - 97 RON and some places carry 93 octane which is 97 - 100 RON if I recall. There is also quite a few places that sell race fuel so I would not be too concerned about the fuel quality over there.

Cheers,
Ray

We get 92 octane in state of Washington where I live. Some areas (east coast primarily I think) can get higher. Calif. has 91, so manufacturers really have to tune for lowest common denominator, which is 91. Most folks over here also think Subaru would never give us an STI motor different from the rest of the world. I think we will get the 2.5 and people will be pretty surprised. I'll let you know in about an hour whether you have to sell your dirty socks or not. All information will be on www.nasioc.com in the STI information forum (NASIOC is North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club web site) if anyone is interested. Cheers, Oldnslow.

Kempo - Don't worry about insurance in the US - they don't have NCB so it doesn't matter how long you've been there. In fact, you don't even need a US license to get insurance. Expect to pay roughly the same as here for the same coverage, but it varies state to state.

JUST released U.S. STI specs:
2.5 liter with AVCS, making 300 hp at 6000rpn, 300ft-lb. torque at 4000rpm, full DCCD (manually adjustable). This is awesome news for us. First time I ever recall U.S. actually getting a higher performing car than rest of the world for a foreign manufacturer. Reactions?

To be fair, the US usually gets their cars cheaper than much of the rest of the world, so you can hardly complain that the performance isn't the same. A Prodrive style STI in the UK is £27995 - nearly $45000 - would you be prepared to pay that, or would you dismiss it as silly money?

Subaru have totally lost the plot releasing a 2.5 turbo in the USA and not the rest of the world.

So we get a non DCCD, 265BHP 2 litre, the USA gets a 2.5litre, DCCD equiped 300BHP car.

The mind boggles.

I doubt it's got a 2.5 litre engine. I suspect it'll have a 2 litre turbo, with around 260 Bhp. The old RS in the US had a 2.5 litre engine(from the legacy I think), but putting that in an impreza STI would require a whole lot of changes. The move is towards a global platform and i'm not sure this goes towards that goal
here is the press release from the formal the Detroit Auto Show:

Subaru Introduces the 2004 Impreza WRX STi at North American International Auto Show

`No-Compromise' Performance Model Is the Most
Powerful Subaru Ever Offered in North America

DETROIT, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today introduced
the long-awaited 2004MY Impreza WRX STi, an ultra high-performance all-wheel
drive sedan, at the North American International Auto Show. Based on the
critically acclaimed Subaru Impreza WRX, Impreza WRX STi is completely re-
engineered to provide world-class sports car levels of acceleration, handling
and braking performance. Impreza WRX STi will serve as the performance
flagship of the Subaru line when it arrives in dealerships this summer and
will earn distinction as the most powerful Subaru ever offered for sale in
North America.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030106/PHM043 )
The Impreza WRX STi draws motorsports technology directly from Subaru
expertise in World Rally Championship (WRC) competition, and is designed to
appeal to the serious driving enthusiast. Impreza WRX STi is powered by a
turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter DOHC boxer engine producing 300
horsepower @6,000 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of peak torque @4,000 rpm, teamed
exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. Power is transferred to all
four wheels via a sophisticated Subaru All-Wheel Drive system designed to
optimize performance in all conditions.

Introducing Subaru Tecnica International (STI)
STI stands for Subaru Tecnica International, the high-performance and
motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru, which offers the
only exclusively All-Wheel Drive line of passenger cars and crossover-type
vehicles in the United States, has been proving the performance and durability
of its All-Wheel Drive technology in World Rally Championship competition
since 1989.
Until now, STi-badged Subaru vehicles had been available only in select
world markets. However, the success of the WRX in the U.S. prompted strong
(and vocal) demand from American consumers for an even more extreme-
performance version of this car.
As a result, the U.S.-market Impreza WRX STi gives up nothing compared to
models offered in Europe, Japan and other markets and in some ways offers more
performance. For example, the 2.5-liter turbocharged powerplant is the
largest displacement engine ever installed in a WRX STi model and is exclusive
to the North American market. This unique engine also provides strong torque
characteristics at both low and high rpm.

Rally Tested, Road Ready
The Impreza WRX STi benefits from the redesigned front and rear styling of
the 2004MY Impreza line. The expressive new design is the result of close
consultation with Subaru STi engineers and the Subaru World Rally Team to
improve air resistance, optimize lift force balance, maximize engine cooling
and provide Impreza models with a bolder, more dynamic appearance. In its
exterior design, Impreza WRX STi leaves no doubts about its performance
potential -- a look that is equally functional. The enlarged hood scoop in
the aluminum hood feeds outside air to the intercooler that is significantly
larger than the unit found on Impreza WRX. A completely functional dual
element rear spoiler -- which appears to be borrowed directly from the Subaru
World Rally Car -- helps reduce lift and improve stability at high speed.
Airflow is also managed via front side spoilers on the front bumper and STi
side ground effects. The front fascia features four high-intensity discharge
(HID) headlamps with smoke tinted lenses and distinctive STi fog light insert
covers for a no-nonsense look. Large diameter Brembo(R) brakes are clearly
visible between the spokes of the 17-inch lightweight aluminum-alloy BBS(R)
wheels.
The 2.5-liter horizontally opposed ("boxer") four-cylinder engine is based
on a specially reinforced "semi-closed deck" engine block with forged aluminum
alloy pistons, forged high-carbon steel connecting rods and sodium-filled
exhaust valves. This advanced powerplant incorporates Subaru AVCS (Active
Valve Control System) variable valve timing technology to optimize the
engine's volumetric efficiency throughout the rev band. It is the first
application of this technology on a Subaru in North America. The large
capacity intercooler includes a manually operated water spray feature to
provide additional cooling.

Driver-Adjustable All-Wheel Drive
WRX STi is equipped with the brand's most performance-directed All-Wheel
Drive system with DCCD (Driver Control Center Differential). In automatic
mode, the computer varies the front/rear torque split automatically depending
on driving conditions and driver input. In manual mode, the DCCD system
allows the driver to vary the front-to-rear torque distribution for different
driving conditions.
Using a small control wheel on the car's center console, the driver can
set the system to transfer as much as 65 percent of available torque to the
rear wheels to increase handling agility.
Standard safety features include front seat head/chest side impact air
bags (SRS), dual front airbags and three-point seatbelts. Front seat belts
include electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters. All 2004
Impreza models receive collapsible pedal controls that "break away" during a
frontal impact to help reduce foot injuries.

Media Web Site at http://www.media.subaru.com.

Industries Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 600 franchised dealers across the United States.

I think the 2.5 motor sounds sweet--forged aluminum pistons (didn't the new JDM STI get some kind of cast pistons?), forged carbon steel rods, sodium filled values. We even get, I think, forged BBS wheels, which I think may have only been optional in Japan. This is awesome news for us, and maybe Subaru just recognized the burdgeoning US market for the WRX and STI. Don't forget we are the only country that responded positively to the bug eyed WRX, and maybe Subaru decided to go extra for us for our support. Obviously the main factor, though , was the EVO 8 competition. But to give us DCCD, I think, is a real recognition of the high level of interest in a true STI in our country. This car is going to really gain Subaru a ton of respect over here.

Sounds a fantastic car and I don't blame the Americans for being excited about it. If anybody starts to have a go then they should direct it towards FHI, IM and Subaru

I bet that engine has some tuning potential

I am blown away !!!! I honestly can't believe that they are getting a 2.5 litre...that is awesome, the low down torque advantage over the JDM STI must be huge....that coupled with the active center diff must make this a EVO killer and possibly a Skyline killer...stock for stock ....unreal......I want one, time to sell the socks and head to the USA !!!! Congrats yanks

2.5 is easier for emmisions laws then 2.0 so it was the reason to go 2.5
I am happy as hell. I'm first on the list for a new STi :-)

Had a scooby 1998 to 2000, loved it to bits but moved to Canada.

Watched the whole WRX thing with interest, suspecting it was all going to explode this side of the pond.

But I'm totally amazed by this.

Unbelievable!!

Where's me cheque-book, or is that check-book?

Fantastic!

Surely it's only a question of time before the 2.5 makes it over this side of the pond?

Perhaps this is the STI 9, or a new model due later in the model year? Just idle speculation, that's all...

I thought Californian emissions regs were the strictest in the world, so I can't see there being a problem with that side of things.

Also remember that Subaru is still not the size of someone like BMW. BMW, for example, are homologating (or whatever) their Works cooper worldwide, which involves the EU Certificate of Conformity messing around, plus federalization in the states, plus goodness only knows what in whatever other territory.

My guess is that the US has been crying out to get a worth adversary for the EVO, therefore this got the priority for homologation...

Just again my thoughts, no basis in reality
