My fan has packed up the car is overheating and a coolant hose has blown. Can any one help me fix this this weekend who lives in Sussex.

Having been unemployed for a while, I have a job interview on Monday an really urgently need to use the car.

I am not very mechanicaly minded. But have checked the fuse and this seems to be OK. I expect it is something very simple. So if any of you Sussex lot who tinker about with cars who can help me out. Please give me a call.

For emergency use when the temp goes up put the heater on full this should stop the engine overheating

 

It is most likely the fan switch...
Wouldnt even attempt emergency use with the heaters on!!!!!!!!!
If the car has overheated then there is a good chance that there is air in the system, this will normally sit in the heater matrix which means no water will be cooled...
Plus the heater has very low cooling ability...
Not tryin to put a downer on things but feel it is wrong to suggest any use of the car when it is over heating, especially as the heater isnt going to cool it enough to stop it overheating..
Unless you want one of the head gaskets to fail, DO NOT use the car at all until the problem is fixed!!

Personally if i was really stuck and had no choice but to use the car i would connect the fan directly to the battery, this is by no means an answer but at least i could be sure that teh fan will be running when needed..

i go with the the other guy for emergency connect fan straight to the battery otherwise dont use the vehicle!!!!!!!!

 

deos it overheat when on the move or only when sitting in traffic.is the car fitted with a/c if so just turn the a/c on and this should trip the fan in (if it is a wiring/sensor fault)or you could just bridge the fan switch with a fuse link wire.feel free to ask for any info mate hope this helps .rob

Switch on air con does get the fan working.
Have found the coolant leak and have sealed with supper glue and duct tape. Checked out the fan and released lots of air out of the coolant system and it now seems to be ok. So thanks again as the car is running ok an I can get it to the garage 25 miles away.
No one came to help me :-( But lots of good advice... thats what scoobynet is all about.

If it has got to a point where it has split a coolant hose i would be very wary of a head gasket failure.........coolant hoses only split due to age deterioration (not very common) or excess pressure.......usually down to combustion gasses being forced past the headgasket into the cooling system.
