I'm looking at options for a spare/replacement gearbox - do all the STi variants have the shorter ratio's (4.44 versus 3.9:1, no?)? Do I just need the gearbox and rear diff to change the final drive ratio? And what year STi's can I use as donors for a Euro my00?

Finally, is it just the type RA that has the electronic adjustable centre?

Thanks
Richard

Richard,

As a man with 2 broken gearboxes in his garage... unless you are talking about an STi7 gearbox, there isn't much difference in the gearboxes across the different models when it comes to strength.

I know it's becoming a mantra, but "talk to Mark" (TTM) is the best advice I can give at this moment.

The centre diff issue is unrelated to gearbox strength. Yes, I'm gonna fall for an uprated (possibly adjustable) one as well, but first you need to keep them cogs from shredding

It's affordable, cheaper than/as expensive as OEM in a way but it seems to do the job very well. Fitting is very important, and can ruin the whole deal, but if you have a decent mechanic, who is willing to follow LP's advice, I truly believe his offer is the best deal out by far today.

HTH

Wanna sell me one of your old boxes then - assuming none of the bits punched their way out?

This is my other option - to strengthen a standard one. But then what about the final drive, I want the lower gearing too! What component in the 'box and rear diff sets the final drive? Can I buy the separately from Subaru for non-silly money?

If money was no option, I know where there's an RA leccy centre'd one for sale - I could (perhaps should) rebuild that with LP parts...but I guess it means re-learning to drive on track without ABS...could get expensive in itself

Thanks Colin,

What I really want is a knackered RA box and diff (+ control unit ) for little cash that I can then strengthen up, but any knackered (or low cost) 4.44:1 box and diff would be considered...assuming it's only suffering stripped gears, of course!

Richard
PS: sorry Paul!

its ok paul wasn't thinking of the S2 kit.

I have some STI gear kits not sure about crown wheels and pinions I will have to check.

I have a 4.4 rear diff if that is any good.
