Shouldn't all STI engines have the VF28, is there any way other than taking the motor apart to be 100% sure it's an STI ??

STi3 VF23
STi4 VF24
STi5&6 VF28

None had TD04, but the WRXs did

They don't all have VF28's as STI IV's for example have VF24's... What age Impreza are you talking about? On recent models (at least since 97) the intercoolers are silver and the castings on the engine are red. You'll see a strut brace in the engine bay as well, branded STI. Of course non of this garuantees the car you're looking at is a genuine STI. For that look at the VIN number and compare it with the list on the SIDC website in the FAQ section.

The StTi engines never came with a TD04. Early cars came with a TD05.

The VF turbo, would depend on the year, VF24,23,28,29,were used up to about 2000.

There are ways to help identify an engine, but unless you know the engine is original, there's no guaranty.

The head gaskets should be 3 ply steel, and can be checked. Red manifold is unreliable. Turbo, IC, IC hoses the same.

Mark.

Cool guys, the engine is out of the car so only visual clues are the turbo and the fact the head gaskets appear to be quite thin. I have the chassis number of the car it came out of, just going to check what it was now.

The engine is supposed to be out of a 2000 STI 6 - but my guess is the owner of the has swapped engines or it's not an STI car but a WRX

It's unlikely to be a WRX (at least what we call a WRX ie Jap Spec) either...the earlier ones had TD05,s the later cars had VF series Turbos.

Only the Japanese GT's, Aussie WRX, and Euro spec car's were fitted with TD04's...

Have you checked the Chassis No yet?
