Question

The rules say you should have a cat on your car so if you don't you won't pass your MOT and therefore your car in illegal!

If your car is illegal does it invalidate the insurance even if you declare the fact it is decatted?

Zaz - I suppose technically speaking you are right. I believe most people get round this by declaring a 'stainless steel exhaust system' - If in doubt ask your insurer before you make any changes.

ZAZ,
sounds like someone is considering a decat

you've got a jap import (I think!), thus it does not exist on the MOT test book, for clarification, look at your V5, what does it say for model type? Mine says somwthing like 'subaru rigid 2 axle" Take this to MOT station, they won't find anything in their book to match this, therefore they have to put it through a non/pre cat test, which it should pass.

If we now go to the decat situation, same applies, should go through as a no cat needed test, and should pass.

I'm hoping to decat the blackbeast at some point, but James Bushell, who also uses GDA, has a full decat and has no probelms with MOT iwth regards to the exhaust.

Might be worth chatting to Graham at GDA about this.

bottom line is, if it fails the MOT then yes, your insurance is invalid, but as mentioned above, it should get through the MOT.

hope that some of this makes sense

Taking this to the extreme, it would mean that an empty washer bottle would render you uninsured!! Probably worth remembering that the MOT is a statement about the roadworthiness at the examined date, and not about the future condition.
Go for it !!!
