barring 5k rpm starts, does a moderately worn clutch make throttle response crap? I nail it in 1st and although the car shifts, it doesn't seem to throw me back...but when in 2nd, there is quite a lot of throw back...

 

My car felt a lot quicker when I had the clutch replaced. Don't know if this was actually the case.

 

in theory a new clutch should help the car to accelerate quicker. The clutch disengages the drive train and therefore a lipping clutch does not transferr all the torque to the wheels. Look what happens if you bring the clutch up to biting point but hammer the accelerator, the car doesn't move that much quicker.

Clutches that are failing will slip in the higher gears first (4th and 5th). If your clutch is slipping in 1st or 2nd, it is long gone, and you should replace it.

Chances are, if you feel the turbo hit in 2nd, your clutch is fine.

If the RPM's increase while the vehicle speed remains constant, you have a slipping clutch.

My stock clutch held out for 1400 miles before it began slipping noticably. Since upgrading to an ACT clutch, all has been well, for 16,000 miles now.
