Intercooler spray question
I have an MY94 WRX, non-sti, just a bog standard rex. So it has no intercooler spary. however, I would like one. What is the feasability of constructing one and how?
cheers,
Michelle.

Michelle - this is really strange but I have been looking at the feasibilty of putting a small tank of liquid Nitrogen (I was advised against liquid Oxygen) in the boot and actually piping this though to the intercooler.
If I get this right using fine copper piping I should be able create a massive supercooling heatsink.
Really I have borrowed the idea from the cooling systems being employed in supercomputers, if it works for them...

You know that bit where you asked "What happens if it crashes?" I think the computer tecchies didn't have the same things in mind as you did...

I think this will work really well if you take a tin opener and remove all of that blisterd area from the bonnet then go down the garden centre and buy one of those crop sprayers, the sort that goes on your back. Install this in the seat beside you and run the nozzel through the sun roof and in to the hole in the bonnet. Fit the spray bar nozzel and hay presto as you are driving along at very high speed you have efficient and effective cooling.
Simply get down to b&q, get some piping and extend your washer jets using a t piece get some sticky tape and tape the extended pipes to the side of the intercooler.

Bonus is when you use the water spray you get nicely washed windows too.

Brendon - As I was looking at recirculating the liquid N back around using a compressor and not actually releasing the gas I should be okay.
The intercooler being so far back only a significant indicident (sorry showing by petrochem days) would damage the system. Though even in this extreme, as liquid N is an inert gas, it would actually act as a spark and fire suppresant (sorry about the spelling).

I was able to fit one to my 95 WRX it is very easy all you need is:
one large water pistol Filled with water.
Piece of hose (length depends on version required).
one small Child (nephews are good for this)
one harness and child seat (or if you can't afford this, Rope).

Expensive solution
1. Simply attach child to child seat preferably a comfortable position especially if not your child.
2. Attach seat to bonnet or Passenger front wing for better visibility.
3. Attach one end of the hose to the Water pistol and the other end into the bulge.
4. Bribe child with Toys and Sweets (preferably Teletubbies or Bob the Builder theme depends on age).
5.Get him to pull the water pistol trigger at a consistent rate.
For the Cheap version as above but attach child directly to bonnet.

Hope this helps

Michelle i`ve got instructions/diagrams for a diy kit, never got round to trying it my self but looks quite simple to fit, uses all the sti switches etc. got it off the internet but the site no longer exists. next time your in the carlisle/cumbria for a meet i give you a copy.

the way water spray works is by spraying a very fine mist over the intercooler so stuff from B&Q won't work
. as the cooling happen from water evaporation
your best option is BRD KIT which i used to have, or the scooby mania kit. both will cost you over £200 without a tank. so they become a bit expensive if you ask me. the tank wil have to be big as you will be surprised how much water you will go through, and can cost anything from £10-200.
