S or T might get you a MY99 or MY98. The MY99 has larger hoop rear spoiler on the 4 door and little lips on the corners of the front spoiler which is reshaped slightly. MY99 is a slightly better drive and has 7 more BHP. Later cars remember will have more of the coveted manufacturer's warranty left but S and t plates are a bargain.

I am looking into getting my first Impreza and would like some advice.
A friend of mine has an S-reg car and when I drove it I thought it was superb, but should I but an S/T reg (sorry don't know the MY numbers) or spend a bit more money and go for a V/W reg with the upgraded brakes etc.

Depends what you want. If you buy an older car you can spend the difference on mods, but a newer car should hold its value better.
