I am due to have my clutch replaced soon and I was wondering whether to have an Aluminium flywheel fitted at the same time. It is the same price as the stainless steel flywheel and I would imagine with it being so lightweight would give almost no loss of power.

Anyone got any thoughts on this and whether it would be beneficial?

Never heard of aluminium flywheel!

If it is too light, car will be a real pig to drive.

I have heard of aluminium flywheels, and have one on my rover v8 engine, but its got a bloody massive twin plate clutch too. Never heard of a subaru Alu. flywheel though. Never heard of a stainless steel one either.
Some Alu flywheels dont take to high revs anyway, with a tendancy to explode, hence the big V8s, or racers that use them have transmission shields or kevlar blankets around the bellhousing, just in case.

Which type are you planning using ? how heavy ? It will help acceleration in the lower gears but can be more difficult to drive with more tendency to stall or judder at low speeds. Really depends on what you are using the car for I would say

Well from a very reliable source from the states I am told that they have fitted thousands of these to stateside Scoobies and they have not had one comeback on them.

I am waiting to have a clutch fitted so may go for one at the same time.

I am also told that thye make a vast improvement to acvceleration and no detrimental effects to idling.

 

I had my flywheel taken down to 8kgs & the difference was quite noticable, what I notice is that it is a pig to pull away unless some revs [1500+] are dialed in.
