Having never driven a uk spec scooby I was just wondering what the difference is in driving performance between say my STi V & a uk 218bhp model is, are we talking vast difference or minimal on grunt?

Really world twisties not much IMHO both can corner at similar speeds. Straight line stuff classic stuff wise an STI is about 2-3 seconds quicker to a 100.

Andy,

I had an STI V2 which when on the rollers did 280HP/253 lb/ft torque and it was damn quick. My new 02 WRX (standard) obviously aint as quick in a straight line, feels alot more solid round twisties and more importantly the power deilvery seems more even, the old STI felt like the turbo just had an on off switch, it was either sedate or just mental!!!

I've had an Sti2 Type RA, Sti 3, and Sti 4 Type R. Each time I was changing car I tested one UK model and just though no, too slow when I could have way more power for similar cash. That said, I've never been in a tuned UK car and bet those are more competitive . Standard though, the Stis are a lot quicker.

Handling wise I actually prefer the UK cars or regular WRXs, rather than Stis. That's just me - I like my fast cars to lean a bit in bends, with a bit of dive and squat aswell - makes the handling more progressive in my opinion. I'm less interested in out and out grip levels.

I agree about the Sti2 though - those things had bugger all go and then BLAM!!! Imagine that with the short ratio box....manic as hell. The later Stis had a much smoother power delivery. The Sti2 is old school turbo nutter!
